Former Mexican ambassador to Chile who saved hundreds from dictatorship persecution passes away

Gonzalo Martínez Corbalán, a former Mexican ambassador to Chile who saved hundreds from dictatorship persecution, passed away last Sunday, aged 89.

Martínez aided no less than 756 Chileans, among them the wife and daughters of Chilean President Salvador Allende, from September 15 1973 until June 1974.

He also made arrangements for Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s exile to Mexico. Neruda, however, never made it to the destination, having died at the Clinica Santa Maria under suspicious circumstances which are being investigated by Judge Mario Carroza.
